Many white women ask me what do when the n-word comes in up their novels or instruction. We know the deficit ways this has been taught- here is what I would say to my students as an ELA teacher.

Words of wisdom from @GholdyM.

Don't stop at telling Ss to not use it: historicize or intellectualize the word.

This is the COOLEST. A Google Earth-type representation of the planet. Every green dot is a radio station. Click any dot to listen in. It’s like cultural teleportation. You could spend hours with this thing…

This is really awesome! I tried it and automatically got a Tamil station in Markham.

If Black children are old enough to experience racism, other children are old enough to learn about racism and how to be an antiracist.

Truth.

Imagine if this started in Kindergarten?

Pencil and paper tasks are always followed up with conversations. There's also a lot of "show me what you can do".

Educators, I plead as a parent of a child with an LD, get to know our children. Their needs do not cancel out their long lists of Abilities. Because they don’t know something today, doesn’t mean they won’t master it next week if taught properly, using their strengths. 1/3

This is such an important thread.
We've been using the inclusion model for Grade 8 @TWPublicSchool so I have 5 Ss with an identified LD this year. I love the confidence that comes when they get something. V did a finger dance recently when she figured out a pattern rule.

Ss in 8B @TWPublicSchool recorded different reasons why Black History Month is important. Black pain, suffering, contributions, and excellence came out in their ideas. We will be sharing some of these ideas during our virtual assembly on Friday.

Africville was an African-Canadian village located just north of Halifax and founded in the mid-18th century. In the 1960s, it was demolished by the city in what many said was an act of racism. Watch our video to learn more:

Ss in 8B were quite impressed by the citizens of Africville when we learned about land use issues in Geography. We will visit Africville again as we did into the History curriculum.

I need to examine "morning person". I describe myself as not a morning person, but the reality is, I'm hurting and mornings are hard, this is reality for a lot of people.

It's not simply just me being grumpy, it's that my body needs time to warm up to not hurt.

This came up with Ss in 8B @TWPublicSchool during our time online. A student apologized for not doing the work during class time. She explained that she had more energy in the evenings and will get the work done then. She always followed through. 8B need more "soft" mornings.
